You are hired by a very successful mining company. You get a percentage of everything you mine. You are loaned the tools you will need to work. You have to pay your boss the money for the tools once you have found enough gold for a full gold bar. Once you have your gold bar, you have to pay your boss 1/7 of it everyday for one week. The catch is, you can only cut the gold bar 2 times, and in order to keep your job, you have to be able to pay your boss the whole gold bar by the end of the week. You also can’t pay in advance for any days of the week (ex. if its thursday, your boss needs 5/7 of the gold bar if Sunday is the first day). How does he cut the gold bar?

He cuts the bar so he has a 1/7 piece, a 2/7 piece, and a 4/7 piece. On Sunday, he gives his boss the 1/7 piece of the bar. On Monday, you give him the 2/7 piece of gold, and get the 1/7 piece back. On Tuesday you give him the 1/7 piece, so he has 3/7 of the bar. On Wednesday, you give him the 4/7 piece, and get the 1/7 and 2/7 pieces back. On Thursday, you give him the 1/7 piece. On Friday, you give him the 2/7 piece, and get back the 1/7 piece. And finally on Saturday, you give him the 1/7 piece so your tools are paid off, and you can keep your job.
